I have enjoyed working with all my trainees, some taking longer than others to grasp the skills
required to give independence. From the moment of meeting your trainee and the expectations, although daunting, spur you on to enable them to open new doors and experience new challenges, such as walking to the shops visiting clubs, getting to and from schools, colleges and day centres and accessing the community. Teaching each individual at their own pace, skills such as Road Safety, how to use Public Transport, reading timetables and handling money to name but a few.
I never realised what an impact this journey of a Travel Trainer would have upon me and the
sense of joy and achievement when you can send your trainee off into the big wide world that sometimes would only be viewed from a window”.
